Our Story
Linda and Jeff Riach started Oakworks®, Inc. in 1978 after graduating
from college.
While living at the Healthcote Community in Northern Maryland,
the two joined the "back to the land" movement and had been working as
cabinetmakers and seminar providers.
They met David Linton, a polio victim and practitioner of Esalen Massage,
at one of their alternative energy workshops.
Linton asked the couple if they could make him a portable massage table
and thus, Oakworks® massage tables were born.
Oakworks® is a company built on the Riach's profound personal experiences
and belief system.
Massage training moved from seminars to schools of higher education,
and Oakworks® nurtured the development and the relationships of these
young schools and educators.
As activists for the importance of massage, the Riachs have actively
partnered with the massage community by supporting such organizations as
- Florida State Massage Therapy Association (FSMTA)
- Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP)
- Massage Therapy Foundation (AMTA Foundation)
- Touch Research Institute (TRI)
- Canadian Touch Research (CRTC)
In addition, they have backed legislative drives that worked to further the professional image and creditability of the massage industry, and have acted with Emergency Response Teams through both financial and equipment donation.
